Indiana MMA Proposal Sets Varying Standards

Legislative bill would regulate only large shows

Mixed martial arts shows are popular in Indiana — sometimes for reasons that make state legislators, regulators and professional fighters bristle. While the state has a boxing commission, there are no standards for staging an MMA show.

The Indiana General Assembly is addressing the issue, but basing standards on the size of the crowd watching an event — which is part of an amendment to a current bill — baffles at least one pro fighter.

An amendment to Senate Bill 160, which passed in the Senate and is under review in the House Public Policy Committee, stipulates that shows with crowds of 5,000 or more would be subject to regulation by the Indiana State Athletic Commission.

With Ken Shamrock’s recent suspension by the California State Athletic Commission for a failed drug test, the hybrid boxing/MMA event “March Badness” was left with a hole in the evening’s MMA main event.
